Providence Day’s Upper School musical “Pippin” has garnered five nominations in the 2018 Blumey Awards.

The Blumey Awards honor excellence in high school musical theatre. Blumenthal Performing Arts launched the program in 2012 to recognize, reward and encourage talent and achievement in musical theatre among high school students in the greater Charlotte area.

Based on the 1972 musical, "Pippin" uses the premise of a mysterious performance troupe, led by a Leading Player, to tell the story of Pippin, a young prince on his search for meaning and significance.

PDS’s musical was nominated for Best Choreography Execution, Best Ensemble/Chorus and Best Supporting Actress (sophomore Isabella Patterson as Fastrada).

12th-grader Tess Giordano (as Leading Player) and 11th-grader Chris Melton (as Pippin) also were among the students who scored in the top 20 in the Best Actress and Best Actor categories, respectively, and are invited to audition for the Blumey Award judges May 5 for a spot in the top six, from whom winners will be chosen.

The awards competition ran between Jan. 19 and April 21, during which a performance of each participating school’s musical was viewed and evaluated by a panel of three judges. In addition to awarding points according to detailed guidelines, each judge, who anonymously attended home venue performances, produced performance and production commentaries for each school as a learning tool.

After all the musicals were evaluated, respective scores were tabulated with the highest scores in each category determined the nominees and winners.

Winners will be announced during the annual Blumey Awards ceremony at the Belk Theater May 20, which will feature a live number from each of the finalists for Best Musical.

Ticket information for the general public is issued by Blumenthal at least two weeks in advance of the ceremony.
