2022-23
Round Square United Kingdom - Point 42

Student delegates traveled to Oxford University to represent PD at the Round Square Conference themed “Take Less: Be More.” On the coast of Wales they explored the global issues of conservation and sustainability through activities including a visit to a Bug Farm and coasteering.
United Kingdom
Pam Heacock, Assistant Head of Lower School, and Erica Katz, LS Teacher attended a Round Square Workshop in Oxford, England to learn about the Heroes of Discovery program. This program aims to bring the 12 attributes of the Round Square Discovery Framework to life for younger students in grades K-8.
Bermuda - Point 44

Two PD students, Ivy Greer Dyer ’26 and Cate Brinley ‘26 spent two separate weeks in March on an exchange to Bermuda High School for Girls in Pembroke, Bermuda.
Peru - Point 45

Julia Maybry ‘25 spent 4 weeks at Colegio San Silvestre in Lima, Peru. Reciprocally, her host student Liyi, joined the Providence Day community for the month of March.

Five Upper School students participated in a student-led Round Square dialogue about the impact of stand-up comedy on modern society entitled “Healing the World Through Comedy” hosted by St. George’s College in Lima, Peru.
Colombia - Point 46
Round Square Exchange Colombia
Raya Bose ‘26 attended Colegio Los Nogales, in Bogotá, Colombia for two weeks in March. Her host student, Natalia then attended PD for two weeks, giving presentations on Colombia to Upper School Spanish 2 classes as well as Lower School classes.
Germany - Point 47

Charlotte Kraus ‘25 spent a month at Schule Schloss Salem, a boarding school in Baden-Württembrg, Germany. German student, Greta, then joined the Providence Day community for a month.
Cultural Visit Germany
An Upper School student from Germany joined the sophomore class at PD for six weeks in the fall. While at PD, he graciously visited our second grade classes to share a presentation about life in his home country.
Armenia - Point 48
Round Square Postcard Armenia
4 Upper School students joined a student dialogue hosted by Shirakatsy Lyceum, a Round Square school in Armenia. Students from countries around the world shared their personal childhood heroes, while small discussion groups focused on why we consider people heroes and identified common characteristics.
Australia - Point 49
Round Square Postcard Australia
Two Upper School PD students participated in a Round Square Postcard in honor of International Women’s Day hosted by the MLC School in Australia. Participants shared research on employment fields in their respective countries and identified those with the greatest and least gender disparity and gender pay gap. The conversation explored how to promote innovation for a gender equal future.

St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School, Canada hosted a Round Square student-led discussion on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion within STEM. In small breakout groups, five Upper School PD student participants presented their research and discussed individuals who made pivotal discoveries within their fields.
South Africa - Point 52

Stanford Lake College, South Africa hosted a Round Square student dialogue titled “Mental Health Awareness” where students shared the challenges and stigmas facing students struggling with mental health issues. Six PD Upper School students participated in the discussion.
Morocco - Point 53
Global Educator Certificate: Morocco
Global Studies Assistant Suzanne Clements traveled to Morocco and learned about the values and culture of a country with a younger population at a crossroads–deeply Islamic with a growing secular society, valuing tradition, while embracing modernity.
Japan - Point 54
Global Educator Certificate: Japan
Lower School teacher Shavonn Perkins traveled to Japan to bring her lived experience back to the PD second grade social studies curriculum, which centers around the seven continents. Aside from culture and geography, Perkins focused on learning traditional Japanese dances to share with students.
Thailand - Point 55
Global Educator Certificate: Thailand
Tosha Arriola, Assistant Head of Upper School, learned about mindfulness and meditation techniques while in Thailand. To further explore Thai culture, she took a cooking class, worked one-on-one with a batik artist, and visited 20 temples, as well as an elephant sanctuary.
Spain - Point 56
Educational Travel Spain
Upper School students experienced language and cultural immersion in Seville, Spain while living with a host family and taking daily language classes. Travel included visits to Granada to see the Alhambra, Cádiz for a taste of Spanish beach life, and Madrid to indulge in local delicacies while enjoying iconic sites.
France - Point 57

Upper School students were immersed in French culture and language through participation in an exchange at Lycée Notre Dame de La Merci in Montpellier, France. The students lived with a French host family, attended classes, and enjoyed visits to iconic French sites in both Montpellier and Paris. The students then reciprocally received the French students for a relationship deepening exchange at PD.

An Upper School student from Finland joined PD’s junior class for the spring semester. While here, he shared presentations about his home country with Lower School students.
2021-22
England - Point 30
Round Square Conference England
Five Upper School students were selected to represent PD at the Round Square International Conference. The virtual conference titled “Blue Skies and Brave Conversations” featured a custom 2D world with video conferencing and retro-style gaming. Each day the students experienced a keynote session, followed by interactive discussion groups, student presentations, and student-led activities.
India - Point 31
Round Square Postcard India
Four Upper School students participated in two student-led dialogue sessions with the topics “Dynamics of World Economics” and “Living Our Dreams.” During the first dialogue, students exchanged their experiences and ideas about how the pandemic has impacted their respective countries' economies. In the second dialogue, students explored how fears can inhibit accomplishing dreams through sharing their experiences of failure and doubt, as well as the coping strategies that helped them achieve their goals.
Brazil - Point 32

As students coped with the changes due to the pandemic, six Middle School students represented PD in a student-led dialogue with 70 participants from 13 schools in 9 countries, hosted by Aubrick Multilingual Bilingual School in Brazil. Students listened to a speaker discuss the importance of self-care and then shared strategies for coping with stress, as well as examples of how they practiced self-care.
South Africa - Point 33
Round Square Postcard South Africa
Upper School students participated in two student dialogues hosted by South African schools. The topics were “Uniform or Not?”(hosted by St. Stithian’s Girls College) and “Women in Sports” (St. Andrews School for Girls). Five PD students joined 65 delegates discussing the topic of school uniforms and hair policies and their cultural significance across the globe. Four PD student-athletes joined students from 21 schools in 8 different countries for a global conversation about gender inequality in sports.
Chile - Point 34
Round Square Spanish Language Lab Chile
Upper School students participated in hour-long, Spanish conversations designed for participants who were keen to practice and develop their language skills. Hosted by Craighouse School located in Chile, there were over 30 students from schools in India, Canada, Peru, Chile, Bahamas, Germany, France, and Kenya.
Canada-Vancouver - Point 35
Round Square Vancouver, Canada
PD kindergarten classes connected virtually with peers at the Collingwood School in West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada to discuss their commonalities and differences.
Puerto Rico - Point 36
Educational Travel Puerto Rico
"Community, Culture, and Comida"
Upper School students traveled to Puerto Rico to learn about the effects of Hurricane Maria, and to learn about efforts to regrow small farm holders’ long-term capacity for food production, distribution, and sales. Along the way, they explored some of the natural wonders of Puerto Rico including El Yunque rainforest and bioluminescent bays.
Alaska - Point 37

“Off the Map”
Upper School students explored Alaska, the largest and most sparsely populated state in the United States. They got a glimpse of North America’s tallest peak: Denali, drove along the Cook Inlet to the Kenai Peninsula, and hiked near Exit Glacier to see the 700-square-mile Harding Icefield. Bonding along the way, they experienced the beautiful Alaskan wilderness from mountains to sea life during this incredible adventure.

“Canyons, Climate, and Conservation”
Middle School students traveled to Arizona and enjoyed its iconic natural sights. They worked with the National Park Service and the Grand Canyon Trust to learn about how important preservation, sustainability, and water are in the West, stargazed at Lowell Observatory, and explored landmarks such as the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and Sedona.

“Asian Culture and Natural Wonders”
Middle School students visited San Francisco to learn about Asian culture through visits to Angel Island, the Asian Art Museum, a noodle cooking class, and a tour of Chinatown. Along the way, they appreciated the natural wonders of Muir Woods and Golden Gate Bay.
Wales - Point 40
Global Educator Certificate Wales
Upper School science teacher Jennifer Haney traveled to Wales to study medieval structures, including castles and bridges for her engineering and physics courses.
Iceland - Point 41
Global Educator Certificate Iceland
Upper School teacher Jennifer Bray visited Iceland to study the country's varied physical geography, long democratic history, unique culture and language, and commitment to gender equality and sustainability. The trip included a visit to the private residence of the Icelandic President and First Lady, a bit of volcanic hiking, and explorations of glacial lagoons.

California - Point 23
Round Square Conference USA
Six Upper School students were selected to represent PD at a virtual Round Square Conference co-hosted by the Cate School in California and St. Andrews School in Florida. The conference theme, “Democracy in a Pandemic,” centered on the Round Square pillar of democracy. During the conference, student hosts led global discussions which addressed the conference question “To what extent should we be prepared to surrender basic freedom and liberties for the greater good?”
North Carolina - Point 24
Round Square Postcard
A team of five Upper School students led the way in creating a virtual Round Square event which drew more than 80 participants from 11 schools in France, Japan, Peru, India, and the USA. The event’s theme, "From Crisis to Creation: Life after the Pandemic," challenged students to consider our global ways of being as we move forward.
South America - Point 25
Global Educator Certificate
Nine PD faculty and staff members, spanning all three divisions and multiple disciplines, dove into an enriching virtual global experience entitled, "White Gold: Sugar, Slavery, and You," which provided a broad understanding of the development of sugar slavery throughout the colonial period. Participants explored the development of sugar mills and slave plantations in Brazil, the Caribbean, and Louisiana as case studies in understanding the way sugar changed the world more than any one government intended. Participants then dove into sugar’s historical and current impact on the natural environment and our physical health to build an awareness of how our food choices impact other human beings and the natural environment around the globe.

Ten Upper School students were selected to represent PD at a virtual Round Square Conference hosted by Thomas More College in Durban, South Africa. The conference theme was “Leading for our Time.” In addition to a keynote address by Lindiwe Rakharebe, CEO of the Durban International Conference centre, who shared her insights on leadership and the type of leadership that is needed in our time, the students enjoyed interactive Baraza (student discussion) groups in which they shared opinions and global perspectives regarding the core values of an effective leader and the principles needed to equip the next generation to lead. Eight Middle School students were selected to represent PD at a virtual Round Square Conference hosted by Sunbeam School Lahartara in Varanasi, India. The selected theme for the conference “Let Your Inner Sun Shine” was based on the Round Square pillar of leadership.
Argentina - Point 28
Round Square Conference Argentina
Providence Day School partnered with Chadwick School in California to host a Spanish dialogue for the Americas region of Round Square. Sixty students and teachers from Colombia, Peru, Argentina, Canada, the Bahamas, and the USA enjoyed connecting across cultures while engaging in Spanish.

Mexico - Point 14
Global Educator Certificate
Lower School teacher Erica Katz travelled to Mexico with a group led by experienced naturalists to visit remote monarch butterfly sanctuaries where the butterflies spend their winters. Her travel connected closely with the second grade curriculum: Each second grade classroom rears monarchs from eggs laid in the PD milkweed garden. Students follow the caterpillars as they journey through their life cycles from eggs to butterflies. Once the butterflies emerge, the students release them on their journey south to Mexico to winter.

In the spirit of learning and cooperation, Providence Day School signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Gredos San Diego Cooperativa. Gredos San Diego has campuses in Buitrago, Spain; Alajuela, San Jose, Costa Rica; and Pouma, Cameroon.

Lower School teachers Maria Hedinger and Kelly Smith visited Finland to explore the Finnish early childhood education system, which is known for being a model of excellence in the field. The Finnish system supports the development of the whole child and recognizes that learning through play is an essential aspect of childhood growth and development.

Upper School and Middle School history teachers Emily Young and Sarah Handy teamed together to visit Germany, Poland, Netherlands, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia to immerse themselves in content for their history, religion, and human rights and genocide courses.

As part of its sister school exchange, PD welcomed an upper school student from Lycée Notre Dame de la Merci in Montpellier, France for a four week cultural immersion. In turn, the French school welcomed two PD upper school students for a cultural immersion in France.

Through a selective application process, two Upper School students were awarded a PD scholarship to represent our school in Toronto, Canada, for a Round Square International Conference with the theme, “Bring your Difference.”
Educational Travel
Middle School students enrolled in French embarked on a cultural journey through Québec and Montréal as they lived the Québécois tradition of “sugaring off” at a local Sugar Shack and visited classic sites such as Château Frontenac, Notre-Dame Basilica, and Centre Bell, the home of Montréal’s hockey team, Les Canadiens.

US Educational Travel Iceland
Upper School students visited the land of fire and ice, explored its Nordic heritage, hiked on glaciers, soaked in volcanic hot springs, photographed breathtaking waterfalls, and participated in an environmental service project.

Through a selective application process, four Middle School students were awarded a PD scholarship to represent our school in Belfast, Northern Ireland, for a Round Square Conference with the theme, “Our Changed Environment.”

PD welcomed a group of Upper School students from Odense, Denmark, for a one-week cultural visit.

PD welcomed a group of Upper School students from Krefeld, Germany, for a two-week cultural visit.

As part of its sister school exchange, PD welcomed a group of Upper School students from Lycée Notre Dame de la Merci in Montpellier, France, for a one-week cultural exchange visit. PD also hosted an individual Upper School exchange student for a four-week cultural immersion.
Spain - Point 8
Educational Travel
Upper School Spanish students enjoyed the sites of Madrid before settling into their homestays in Seville where they immersed themselves in language and culture by attending daily morning Spanish lessons, followed in the afternoon by activities designed to improve Spanish language skills and cultural knowledge that included: Exploring the Royal Palace, soaking in the Arabic baths, visiting the Barrio Santa Cruz (the old Jewish quarter), row boating in front of the Plaza España, taking Flamenco lessons, and more!
Global Educator Certificate
Upper School art teacher Richard Dewey gained a better understanding of the Spanish artists he investigated (El Greco, Goya, Gaudí, Miró, Dalí, Picasso), as well as Spanish culture, and art education in Spain, through his Global Educator Certificate visit to Madrid, Granada, Seville, and Toledo, during which he not only visited the masterpieces but also engaged in dialogue with Spanish art teachers.

PD welcomed art teacher Joachim Diala from Halifield Schools in Lagos, Nigeria, for classroom visits with all three divisions at Providence Day School.

PD welcomed a Middle School student from Chadwick International School in South Korea for a four-week cultural visit.
Japan - Point 13
Global Educator Certificate
Funding from the Brian Eichenbrenner Master Teacher Award allowed Upper School art teacher, Richard Dewey, to travel to Japan to expand his knowledge of the techniques and philosophical underpinnings of the traditional Japanese art forms of sumi-e ink painting and shodo calligraphy, as well as Zen Buddhism and Shintoism.
